I was on a podcast networking event today. And one of the questions they asked attendees was “what’s your number one tip for podcast hosts?”
Hey, it’s David Andrew Wiebe.
At some point, every artist should have a publishing channel, because the reality is there are only so many sources of traffic you can tap into on the internet. Whether it’s a blog, a podcast, or a video show, it’s critical.
For those of you deciding to become a podcaster, or if you’re already a podcaster, here’s a tip that can help you:
So, my number one tip for podcast hosts was get into the crevices where others don’t get in.
Let’s say, for example, you’re interviewing Tony Robbins. If you ask about Tony’s story, I’m sure he’ll happily answer. But he’s shared the same answer thousands of times, across different podcasts, shows, and on TV.
You should ask yourself whether Tony would want to answer that question again or if it would draw him into the conversation. He is a professional, so of course he’s going to give you a great answer. And everyone loves Tony’s story.
But given that it’s been asked so many times on so many shows, and so many people are already familiar with it, why wouldn’t you do your homework as a podcaster? Read Tony’s latest book, take a sentence or a quote out of the book, and ask him about that in an open-ended way?
I think that would be a much better use of your time, your audience’s time, and Tony’s time. Everyone’s drawn in by questions they haven’t heard before.
I’m well known for asking questions and getting in crevices where others don’t. So, if you’re not already subscribed to The New Music Industry Podcast, it’s free – I invite you to check that out.
I also have a free podcast workflow checklist on my blog, and a lot of other great free resources on podcasting.
Thanks for watching and see you again soon.
