I hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend. It’s time once again to get caught up with industry news!
Here’s what caught my attention this week.
▶️ Winger Releases New Single, “It All Comes Back Around”
The slated release of Winger’s new album, Seven, is now less than a month away (May 5, 2023). In a recent conversation with Eddie Trunk, Kip Winger revealed that the band filmed six music videos in support of the new release. From here on out, kids, you can expect the releases to come at you fast and furious.
We covered their first single, “Proud Desperado,” in an earlier update. A new Winger album would not be complete without a barnburner, and Desperado delivers.
“It All Comes Back Around” is different. It’s closer to what one might call a power ballad. The melody is unmistakably Winger, and it has its peaks and valleys, but it’s clear that it’s meant to be an emotionally evocative tune.
You might consider its seven-and-a-half-minute runtime indulgent, but Winger is masterful in weaving in atmospheric keyboards, melodic guitar solos, and monolith layered vocals. To borrow a couple of terms from YouTube comments, the song is an exercise in “restraint” and “simplicity.” But let’s remember that not many bands can make that work for over seven minutes. Winger shows they can.
I can’t say I listen to Winger for their ballads, but I do listen to them for variety, and “It All Comes Back Around” is another solid entry in what is sure to be a killer album.
▶️ Sweet & Lynch Release New Single, “Miracle”
Ramping up to the release of Heart & Sacrifice on May 19, 2023, Sweet & Lynch just released their second single, “Miracle.”
I covered their first single, “You’ll Never Be Alone,” in an earlier update. But I can’t help but feel this is the far superior song, with the super duo’s full assets – vocalist Michael Sweet’s soaring tenor vocals and guitarist George Lynch’s creative guitar playing – on full display. In case there was any doubt, Lynch proves once more that he can still wail and shred.
▶️ Here’s How Indie Musicians Can Cut Through the Noise
In case you missed it, in episode 289 of The New Music Industry Podcast, I shared how while the bar might be getting higher in terms of artistry, musicianship, and production, there’s a bar that’s consistently plummeting to its doom. And this represents an opportunity! If you can find your footing in this, you’ve got a greater chance at cutting through the noise. What is it? Listen to the latest episode to find out.
